Minister Fernando hails 'Ten Sports' channel by Sarath Malalasekera Ten Sports, the newest sports channel, to hit the local sporting scene was launched in the presence of several distinguished guests at the JAIC Hilton on Wednesday. Gracing the occasion were the Minister of Mass Communication Imthiyas Bakeer Markar, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Johnston Fernando, Sugath Chandrasekera, Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, Thilanga Sumathipala, former President of the Cricket Board, the Ambassador for the UAE Saeed Ali Al-Nowais, Marck Denton, Director, Syndication Sales and Business Development and several other local and foreign participants. Minister Fernando addressing the gathering said that it gives him great pleasure as the Minister of Sports to be present at this memorable event which is the launch of the new channel 'Ten Sports' by Comet Cable which functions under its parent company Ruhunu 2001 Multivision Pvt, Limited, which is Sri Lanka's premier television network, which has been completely revamped by a new management headed by Nihal Hettiarchchi and ably supported by an excellent management team and loyal investors. This new sports channel will provide the sports loving public of our country more viewing opportunities and also enable the youth of our country to spend their leisure time watching sports events and encourage them to take more interest in participating in sports activities, Minister Fernando said. The Sports Minister said that Multivision has upgraded from 10 to 14 channels and he is sure that the new channel will provide quality sports entertainment and bring events like the 2002 FIFA World Cup live to Sri Lanka. Minister Fernando said that he was also happy that the channel will bring major sporting events including cricket live throughout the year. Ten Sports Director Mark Denton addressing the distinguished gathering on the new sports channel said that Taj Television is the parent company of Ten Sports. Ten Sports signed an agreement with FIFA to show live the football extravaganza the World Cup beginning on May 31, in South Korea and Japan, Mark Denton said. He said that Ten Sports like the CBFS tournament is the brainchild of Abdulrahaman Bukhatir. |
