Ex-MPs protest over Defence Ministry notice

Several former Members of Parliament who did not receive any weapons during the term of their office, were up in arms against a notice issued by the Ministry of Defence alleging that they were issued weapons and they had signed agreements under the fire-arms ordinance and requiring them to return the weapons, which they never got, to the local Police Station within one week of the notice.

Several of these ex-MPs had complained to Defence Secretary Austin Fernando that an SSP in the Ministry had issued letters to all and sundry without verifying the persons to whom weapons had infact been issued. A number of ex-MPs who never received any weapons had protested that the contents of the letters were false and defamatory.

The SSP's directive had been copied to local Police Stations with instructions to ensure that the firearms are collected. The ex-MPs have alleged that the SSP had defamed them with false allegations being copied to the local Police Station, without any verification by the Defence Ministry.
