by Rajmi Manatunga The Boralanda Agriculture Faculty of the Sabaragamuwa University which had been closed for a long time will be reopened in October 2003 affiliated to a new university set up in the Uva Province. This was said by Tertiary Education and Training Minister Kabeer Hashim during an official tour to the area to look into the present condition of the faculty. The Boralanda faculty set up in 28 acres of land ideal for agricultural activities and experiments has all the facilities required for a perfect agriculture faculty including lecture halls, equipment, computers, library facilities and hostels which are worth around Rs.40 million. A new building, laboratory, computer unit and a library that have been inaugurated recently were also discovered gathering rust at the university premises. It is reported that the local government authorities and the people of the area are taking steps to protect the faculty despite the efforts of several bureaucrats to move it out of Boralanda. During the visit, Minister Hasheem also discussed his plans to establish a university in the Bandarawela town of the Uva Province with the officials, politicians and employees who were present at the occasion. |
