Islam creates harmony among diverging units of humanity - Hakeem

Message of Rauff Hakeem, Minister of Port Development, Shipping, Eastern Development and Muslim Religious Affairs, and leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress on the occasion of Holy Prophet Muhammad's birthday.

"Today the Muslims celebrate Milad-un-Nabi, the birthday of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This Great Personality, the final Prophet of Allah for humanity, whose very name exudes love and deep devotion in the one and half billion Muslims across the globe, has through the Message of Holy Quran, which was revealed to the Prophet and the Prophet's Sunnah, the preaching and practices, provided the answers to the social, economical, political and spiritual problems that confront the world in these troubled times.

We in Sri Lanka have witnessed a twenty year period, where intolerance seems to be the order of the day and now can see peace on the near horizon, kindling the hopes and aspirations of all Sri Lankans for the dawn of a new era. We have to, at this juncture, throw our mind to the Holy Prophet's life, a life woven with the golden thread of tolerance. When the Holy Prophet set up his administration in Madinah he proceeded in mending fences with the non-Muslims who resided in the area and was therefore able to bring about peaceful co-existence with all communities in the vicinity.

Patience, perseverance and prayer was the Prophet's guideline for success. To a person of spiritual understanding there is also no hurry though a single minute must not be unused. In our current peace effort, we as Muslims should adopt these guidelines.

We should also, while negotiating, bring to bear that justice, social responsibility, harmony, patience, perseverance and prayer are all ingredients for peace. Islam endeavours to create harmony among the discordant, diverging units of humanity. Never have the need of such harmony been required than today.

We should fall back on the practice of the Holy Prophet and his exemplary life, to enable us to succeed in achieving everlasting peace in our homeland."
