Over 71,000 persons resettled

by Florence Wickramage

More than 71,000 internally displaced persons have been resettled in places of their choice and some of them have gone back on their own, Minister of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugees Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena told the 'Daily News' yesterday.

The Minister said action is being taken to process the findings of the survey done with the Department of Census and Statistics regarding internally displaced persons. The Minister said he was still waiting for the Sinhala Organisations to provide him with statistics regarding internally displaced persons among the Sinhala community.

While appreciating the assistance rendered by the Asian Development Bank for rehabilitation and resettlement work undertaken by the Ministry, Dr. Jayawardena said that it was encouraging to note the ready response he received from other foreign funding agencies to his appeal for financial assistance.

The Minister reiterated that resettlement of internally displaced persons is being done according to their wishes in places of their choice. No person will be resettled by force, he said.
