'Let us end the meaningless ethnic conflict'

Let us act with confidence on the peace process launched for the purpose of building a harmonious, peaceful and united Sri Lanka by putting an end to the meaningless ethnic conflict which will lead to our downfall, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said in a Vesak message.

"We do not hear the reports of the guns now. We are today engaged in a joint effort to reach a peaceful settlement to the ethnic conflict. I, therefore, earnestly request all to make an effort to extend thoughts of goodwill towards other communities, develop mutual understanding and establish cordial and friendly relations during the much revered Vesak season," the message added.

The Prime Minister's message: "Buddhists all over the world commemorate with much reverence the sacred three-fold events that took place on the Vesak Full Moon Poya day - the birth of Prince Siddhartha, attainment of Buddhahood and the passing away of Lord Buddha.

"The supreme doctrine enunciated by Lord Buddha with great compassion to the suffering beings is more befitting today than ever before. The scientific and technological knowledge which advances day by day reinforces and consolidates the sublime truth of Buddha Dhamma.

"Lord Buddha has admonished us that life of man must be held in high esteem above all wealth and riches, and peace and harmony is conducive to the prosperity of mankind. "The war which lasted nearly two decades retarding the progress of the Nation and killing each other has ceased. We do not hear the reports of the guns now.

We are today engaged in a joint effort to reach a peaceful settlement mutually acceptable.

"I, therefore, earnestly request all to make an effort to extend thoughts of goodwill towards other communities, develop mutual understanding and establish cordial and friendly relations during the much revered Vesak season.

"Let us cultivate and practise the noble virtues of Loving kindness (metta), Compassion (karuna), Sympathetic joy (muditha) and Equanimity (upekkha).

The four-fold virtues will help us to achieve our future progress and that of others. "Let us act with confidence on the peace process launched for the purpose of building a harmonious, peaceful and united Sri Lanka by putting an end to the meaningless ethnic conflicts which will lead to our downfall.I wish all a Happy and Peaceful Vesak!"
