Mahinda Rajapakse MP issuing a message to mark the country's independence expressed hopes that this new era will bring a new vision to the country where there will be real independence in the correct perspective of freedom to all its people from Dondra Head to Point Pedro. The message further said: For over 50 years we as one people fought for our political independence to enable us to etch out a distinct identity for ourselves, instead we have got enmeshed in a debilitating debate of diverse visions, be they cultural economic or social. At the time we gained our political independence we had to prevent illegal immigration into our country. We are now in the process of preventing illegal immigration out of our country. The S.L.F.P. had its foundation from 1956 which we believe was the dawn of real independence, with its foundations relevant to the wishes of all people be they from the Deep South or the Deep North. Its basic foundation was to build a social capital and not a mere financial capital. Its values were decency, Democracy, human rights, and environmental safeguards for people living in harmony. These were to be our lodestone pointing the way forward. I as the Chief Whip of the Opposition take this opportunity in the commemoration of the 54th Independence to invite a renewed consideration of how these values could be made applicable to all Sri Lanka where there is peace for all communities to live in harmony in the same spirit, we all fought together for our Political Independence from the Colonial Yoke of over 400 years. Most important of all is how these principles could be flexibly adapted to a new Sri Lanka as one country. May I pray that this new era will bring a new vision to the country where there will be real Independence in the correct perspective of Freedom to all its people from Dondra Head to Point Pedro. May the bonds of Universal Brotherhood bring Peace and Prosperity to Mother Lanka with the Blessings of the Triple Gem now and always. |
