by Jaffna special correspondent The unexpected continuous downpour of rain for two consecutive days has inundated the low lying areas in the Jaffna peninsula. Bumper paddy crops awaiting harvest have been submerged in floods. The worst affected areas are Karainagar, Pandaitherippu, Moolai, Vaddukoddai, Sandilipay and Annaikoddai. In Valigamam area alone 430 hectares of paddy fields are in imminent danger of being submerged in floods. During the first two days Jaffna has had a rainfall of 156.8 millimetres. The tobacco crops in Vadamarachchy has also been affected. Heavy rain coupled with winds has damaged the tobacco crops. Heavy shower of rain and choppy sea have also resulted in the passenger ship that set off from Kankesanthurai to Trincomalee abruptly terminating its journey and returning to Kankesanthurai after covering a distance of thirty knots from Kankesanthurai. It may be noted that a similar unseasonal rainfall had been registered in 1985 causing immense damage to paddy and garden crops in Jaffna.
