SLUNFO names World Peace Dagaba

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

A Dagaba (Pagoda) erected on a rock overlooking the picturesque Sri Sumangalaramaya temple premises at Ampitigala, Madurawala in the Kalutara district has been named the "World Peace Dagaba" by the Sri Lanka United Nations Friendship Organisation (SLUNFO) to coincide with the "World Peace Decade" proclaimed by the United Nations.

The decision to name the Dagaba as the World Peace Dagaba was taken at, the annual convention of the SLUNFO held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall, Colombo on October 21, 2001.

The decade from year 2001 to 2010 has been declared as the "World Peace Decade" by the United Nations with the aim of promoting peace throughout the world.

The naming of this Dagaba as the World Peace Dagaba is aimed at creating a religious feeling and a sense of unity among all ethnic groups in the country, SLUNFO District Chairman and Viharadhipathi of Sri Sumangalaramaya Ven. Hathiyalwala Chandananda Thera told the Daily News.

He said the official ceremony of naming this Dagaba will be held at the temple premises on February 7 at 3.00 pm with the participation of Ministers, Parliamentarians and several foreign visitors. A peace march will also be conducted from the Yala junction to the vihara premises as part of this event.

The Dayakas in the locality have contributed immensely towards the construction of this Dagaba and the President of the Pelpola Vipassi Foundation Ven. Pelpola Vipassi Thera was a major benefactor.

Ven. Chandananda Thera while thanking SLUNFO for naming the Dagaba as the World Peace Dagaba said a Japanese delegation led by Ven. Nisso R. Fukuoka has arrived to attend its unveiling ceremony.
