CWC Leader and Minister of Housing and Plantation Infrastructure Arumugam Thondaman, in an Independence Day Message, said that time is now opportune to reflect on our fruitful and adverse experiences of the past 54 years. The message said; "This is Sri Lanka's 54th anniversary of Independence and the country is facing a severe crisis today even after being liberated from colonial domination. We who fought relentlessly to gain independence, are embroiled in battle against each other, based on mistrust. We are also faced with economic constraints. Our future is dependent on the answer to the questions as to whether we truly gained independence or whether we are yet to gain independence. We have pushed our future into darkness and gloom by isolation and suspicion of each other. This fearful syndrome has to be uprooted totally. The preliminary victory to achieve is peace if we are to usher in true freedom. The second is also peace. We also wish on this occasion that all sections unite on the basis of a sustainable program to make bilateral peace a reality.
