Rajitha promises an orchard on the banks of Kaluganga

by Kalutara group correspondent

Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, addressing an election meeting at the Kalutara Town Hall, recently, said, "So far no politician of the Kalutara District has been able to implement the proposal they have brought forward regarding the 'Kaluganga Scheme.'

"If the United National Front comes into power this time, I have made arrangements to elevate the sufferings of the people who are living on either side of the Kaluganga, by a plantation where apples, oranges, pears, sapadillas and such farm produce will be grown in plenty."

A group of former LSSP and JVP members were received by him at this meeting.

Speaking further, Dr. Senaratne said, "At least ten acres (10 acres) of land on the banks of the Kaluganga will be planted with fruits when the UNP Government is formed and a lot of tourists will visit Sri Lanka. When they come to Kalutara, they will buy any amount of fruits produced by the farms," he said.

He requested the voters not to come for favours of getting them out of police custody having committed crimes, such as illicit brews, selling kassippu, the abuse of womenfolk and other corrupt practices.

Further more, he said, "please do not come to me requesting dismissal or demoting people from their jobs, only thing required to get a job is one's educational qualification.

Opposition Leader of the Urban Council, Kalutara, Dr. W. T. P. Ariyaratne said, "The UNF will definitely win this time, because PA Candidates have no explanation to give its supporters. This shows that they accepted the defeat.

During the last seven years people have been thrown from the frying pan to the fire. Thousands of short-comings have been under gone by the poor masses and three quarter of population in Sri Lanka are waiting for a chance to defeat the PA Government," he said.
