President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga hosted Trade Union representatives at the President’s House yesterday and briefed them on the current political situation in the country. The President told the TU representatives about the anti-Trade Union policies of the former UNP regime and how 85,000 public servants who had asked for a salary increase of three hundred rupees were sacked in 1980. She emphasized that the People’s Alliance had the cooperation of the working class and requested the TUs to prevent the UNP which repressed the trade unions and the working class to come to power. National Grid up by 110 MW

Total power generation for the National Grid increased by another 110 mega watts with the commissioning of the first phase of a state-of-the-art gas-steam power plant at Kelanitissa yesterday.
