Ceremonies to mark 250 years of ordination of Upasampada from Thailand

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has agreed to Gold a series of ceremonies at the Sri Dalada Maligawa and the Anuradhapura Atamasthana to commemorate 250 years of Ordination of Upasampada, brought from Thailand Presidential Secretary K. Balapatabendi told the media at the Presidential Secretariat Tuesday.

A series of ceremonies have been organised at the Sri Dalada Maligawa and the Anuradhapura Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi beginning December 1 as a forerunner to mark the event which falls in 2003. A sum of Rs. 3 million has been provided for the purpose, he said.

The program designated from December 1 to 7 will be islandwide religious activities at village temple levels which includes pirith, bana and poojas ranging from bodhi poojas, hevisi poojas and light poojas. The other activities are lighting of the Kandy Lake Round and the Maligawa. There will be a Hevisi pooja at the Maligawa as well.

The program for December 2 includes religious rituals at the Four Sathara Maha Devales in Kandy, Hevisi Pooja at the Maligawa and overnight pirith ceremony at the Dalada Maligawa.

The program on December 3 will be an alms giving for 250 priests at the Malwatte Maha Vihara, handing over of the Gazette declaration of the newly constructed four boundaries of the Maligawa to the Malwatte and Asgiriya Mahanayakas by President Kumaratunga. The renovations and landscaping of the Mahamaluwas will also be inaugurated on that date. There will be an all night hevisi poojas as well. This will be followed by an all night hewisi pooja.

The daily program from December 4 to 7 will be the special bodhi poojas at the Sri Maha Bodhi which will be followed by the dalada poojas at the Sri Dalada Maligawa. All these religious activities will be organised by the Malwatte Maha Vihara.

Parallel ceremonies will also be held at the Anuradhapura  Atamasthana.
