Dental Faculty chats through Internet with overseas counterparts

The Faculty of Dental Sciences of the University has entered a new era of live chat consultation with counterparts overseas through the Internet. Computerised image transfer with audio, video and live chat enabled the faculty to have dialogues for the exchange of information with colleagues in Japan's Saga Medical School and university last month.

The program which was in its experimental stage at Peradeniya as assisted by Prof. Hayashida of the Department of Information Science, Faculty of Engineering of Saga University, Prof. Takeshi Katsuki and Dr. Koichiro Ihara, short term JICA experts in oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery of Saga University on the invitation of Professor N. A. de S. Amaratunga, Dean of the Faculty of Dental Sciences.

Surgeons of the Peradeniya Dental Faculty are already having dialogues with colleagues in Saga regarding treatment procedures for difficult cases of Cleft Lip and Palate Abnormality, Facial Deformity and Oral Cancer, the Peradeniya Faculty said.

Professor Hayashida said at the launch a few days ago that the activity could be considered as a foundation for possible funding for an established communication in the near future.

The necessary computer software was developed by Dr. Duminda Nishantha, Post Graduate Trainee in Engineering in Saga University.
