by Trincomalee correspondent The Maha cultivation (2001/02) under Allai scheme commenced early this month. Water for cultivation was released on November 5. Under Allai scheme 17,413 acres of paddy land will be brought under paddy cultivation and water is obtained from the Mahaweli river. The Maha cultivation under Kantale tank could not commence as sufficient water is not available in the tank. At present there is 30,000 acrefeet of water but according to irrigation authorities the tank should have at least 40,000 acrefeet of water to begin paddy cultivation. Kantale tank receives Mahaweli water from the Minneriya tank through Yoda Ela. Water to Kantale tank will be released only after the Minneriya tank receives 70,000 acrefeet of water, but the Minneriya tank is only partly filled. However the irrigation officials in Trincomalee expect to receive Mahaweli water during the latter part of this month and hope to commence Maha paddy cultivation by the beginning of December. It will be a late cultivation. The extent to be cultivated under Kantale tank is 15,182 acres. |
