Norway hailed for peace effort

The President of the Sri Lanka Norway Society, Dr. Newton Peiris, thanked the Norwegian Government and especially the Ambassador in Sri Lanka Jon Westborg for his enthusiasm to bring about peace to the people of Sri Lanka who are in the midst of a prolonged war that is ruining the economy of the country and bringing death to many innocent civilians. He was addressing the Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Norway Society held at the Galle Face Hotel recently. He was re-elected as the President for the third year.

The Minister Counsellor of the Norway Embassy Oddvar Laegreid, who was the Chief Guest said the Sri Lanka-Norway Society is building very cordial relations with Norway for over a decade. He added that many Sri Lankans are provided with opportunities to visit Norway for advanced studies in various fields of industry, fisheries, agriculture and they perform a yeomen service to improve the quality of life. Norway has also assisted for over a decade in the rural integration and development projects in Southern parts of Sri Lanka, particularly the Hambantota and Moneragala Districts. He added that the country will prosper immensely if the peace process succeeds.
