Sri Lanka’s medal prospect in the women’s 400 metres Chandrika
Subashini will take part in the heats of the 400 metres event at 9.20
a.m. on Wednesday in the Asian Athletic Championship in Pune, India. If
she wins the heat, she will qualify to take part in the semi final at
6.25 p.m. on Wednesday.
Chandrika Subashini came second in the 400 metres event in the last
Asian Athletic Championship in Kobe, Japan in a time of 53.35 seconds
winning the silver medal and she is expected to better her performance
today. The other three lankan athletes who will be in action today are
Jani Chathurangani de Silva in the women’s 100 metres and Anjana
Madushan Gunaratne and Dilan Aloka in the men’s 400 metres.
Asian Athletic Championship began yesterday with a colourful opening
ceremony which lasted for over three hours from 5.00 p.m. on Tuesday
including a cultural display. The chief guest at the opening ceremony
was the chief minister of Maharashtra Province Preethiviraj Chavan.
580 Athletes from 43 countries are competing in 42 disciplines in the
Asian Athletic Championship which is being hosted by India for the
