Causeway washed away

The causeway at Madakumbura, Kothmale has washed away and the people have a lot of trouble when they cross the Kothmale Oya creek.

People said floods triggered by recent rain washed away the Madakumbura causeway.


Stamps shortage

There is an acute shortage of postal stamps in the majority of rural sub-post offices in the Matale district. People have to go to urban post offices to obtain stamps.

Officials said carelessness of the management is the cause for the shortage.


Sri Lanka Library Association AGM

The Sri Lanka Library Association (SLLA) holds its annual sessions and 53rd AGM on Friday, June 28 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, Colombo 7. Over 500 members are expected to participate in this event this year.

Established in 1960, the SLLA has gained international recognition by achieving its status as a National Founder member of the Commonwealth Library Association (COMLA) and national member of the International Federation of Library Association (IFLA).

The SLLA conducts a professional course and examinations in Librarianship to produce qualified librarians in the country. Organizing seminars and workshop and other professional activities help librarians to develop their skills in this field.


Education and art exhibition

A competition and education exhibition under the theme, For future generation filled with creative ingenuity, will be held from June 28 and 29 in Kilinochchi under the patronage of Northern Province Governor Major General G A Chandrasiri, Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa and the Security Forces Commander Kilinochchi.

The objective of the exhibition is to identify, recognize and encourage schoolchildren in Kilinochchi who demonstrate talent in visual art and inventions. It also attempts to exchange knowledge, establish a good rapport with schools in the southern part of the country and to cement friendship among all ethnicities.

There are no restrictions to the theme of the invention exhibition for classes from Year 1 to 5. A maximum of five exhibits from a school is expected. For classes from Year 6 to 11, the maximum number is five from a school and the theme should be relevant to the syllabus of the school. For classes Year 12 and 13, the theme is open and the maximum number from a school is five.

There are no restrictions to the theme for the art exhibition for classes from Year 1 to 5.

A maximum of 10 exhibits are expected from a school. For classes from Year 6 to 11, the theme is My future dream and a maximum 10 from a school can be sent.

The theme for classes Year 12 and 13 is Wonder of Asia in my view and a maximum of 10 from a school can be sent.


Seminar

The International Seminar on Hairdressing, Beauty and Holistic Therapies organized by the AMS Academy free of charge will be held on July 1 at 9:30 am at BMICH.

Organizers say that this will open new doors in the local and global job markets for youths and trade veterans as they can obtain proper internationally recognized qualifications up to the Bachelor's degree level.

The AMS Academy will grant 10 full scholarships for 10 talented students in Sri Lanka to follow the full study programme. Four of the scholarships will be granted to the security forces.

Mihindu Perahera

Diyathalawa, Kadurugoda Maha Vihara Annual Mihindu Procession will be held on June 28 for the 78th consecutive year organised by Sri Punyodhya Association.

The event is organised on the advice and directives of Ven Aluthwela Soratha Maha Nayaka Thera.


Art Exhibition

The Siththaru Endi Ruu, the Second National Art Exhibition will be held from June 27 to 30 from 4 pm at the Lionel Wendt Theatre, Colombo.

The Art Exhibition will include 200 artwork of 80 artists. It is organised by the Jathika Chitrakatha Foundation.

The organization has also taken steps to issue a monthly magazine called Talks and Jokes.


New Principal welcomed

The Old Boys Association of Mahabodhi College will welcome the new Principal of the College, Upul Kariyawasam on July 1 with Senior Minister A H M Fowzie participating as chief guest.

Minister Fowzie will open the new office of the Old Boys Association, present badges to prefects and open the newly designed name board.


Death of LAC Chairman S S Wijeratne

Legal Aid Chairman (LAC) Chairman S S Wijeratne passed away yesterday.

He was 75. Funeral arrangements will be notified later.
