Treasure hunters arrested

Three suspects who destroyed an ancient dagoba in Dimbulgoda in Hakmana and excavated artefacts were arrested by Hakmana Police on Thursday. Police found a brass statue, seven gems and a gold statue in the suspects' possession. They are residents of Gonadeniya.

Deyyandara magistrate remanded the suspects until July 1. Meanwhile, Medawachchiya Police arrested eight suspects digging a paddy field in Maguruhitiyawa, Medawachchiya with the intention of finding artefacts. The Police also seized tools and other implements used by the suspects.


Man nabbed with heroin

Hambantota Police arrested a suspect with 2.60 grammes of heroin in his possession at Ruwanpura. The 39-year-old suspect, a resident of Ambalantota, was remanded until July 3 when produced before the Hambantota Magistrate's Court. Another suspect arrested by Kurunegala Police for allegedly snatching a gold chain from a woman in Kurunegala was remanded until June 26 by the Kurunegala magistrate.


Deadly fall

A 31-year-old man died when he fell while attempting to commit suicide by hanging from a tree. The rope he used had broken and he had fallen to the ground. He succumbed to the injuries.


Fire at factory

A polythene recycling and cover manufacturing factory in Dompe caught fire destroying items in the factory. Dompe Police and the Gampaha and Biyagama fire brigades doused the fire. No one was injured.


Woman dies of elephant attack

An elderly woman in Mahawa died after she was attacked by an elephant. Initial investigations carried out by Mahawa Police revealed that she faced the mishap while she was asleep at her house in Thumbullegama when the elephant attacked her after damaging the house.


Man nabbed with hooch

A suspect was arrested with 120 drammes of illicit liquor and a live hand grenade in his possession at Bandaragama.


Robbers behind bars

The Chilaw Police Crime Investigation Branch arrested two suspects wanted in connection with 11 crimes including house breaking and chain snatching incidents, and recovered part of the loot which included 11 gold chains from their possession and a motorcycle they used in the robberies.


Suspect with heroin held

STF officers attached to the Rajagiriya camp arrested a suspect with 83.380 grammes of heroin in his possession in Borella.
