Royal wins U-19 tennis title

After a lapse of two years, Royal College was able reassert their
supremacy in senior schools tennis. In a performance reminiscent of the
glory days of Royal College tennis, the team led by Udishtaran Raviraj
and ably assisted by Dhanushka Abeyawardana (V. Capt) and former skipper
Sharmal Dissanayake cruised to the prestigious Under 19 Title in grand
style, without dropping a single match to any school in the six ties
played. In a flawless performance Royal
defeated St. Peters by three matches to nil in convincing fashion
with Eroo Samarasinghe and Danushka Abeywardena winning two singles and
skipper Udishtaran Raviraj and Dasun Fonseka winning the tie with a
commanding 6-3, 6-1 win in the first doubles over A. Asauw and S. Gomes.
Royal College dominance was underlined by the fact the services of
their star player and world ranked junior player Shamal Dissanayake was
not required in the final.
Royal beat won all their group matches against St. Thomas (5-0 ), St.
Benedict's (5-0), St. Michele's (5-0), Trinity (5-0) and defeated D.S.
Senanayake (3-0) in the semi-final. They convincingly beat St. Peters
(3-0) in their final quest for the title.
Royal under-19 tennis team was trained by coach Sylvester Francis.
