40th Sri Lanka Schools Swimming Championship:

Ten records shattered on the first day

Ten records were shattered on the first day of the 40th Milo Sri Lanka Schools Swimming Championship began at Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

The first record came in the girls under 19 200 metres back stroke Ishani Erandika Senanayake of Sirimavo Bandaranaike Balika Vidyalaya finishing the event in 2:43.95.

Shehan Kaushalya from Royal College broke the previous record of 2:22.68 set by E.M.K.Fernando’s in 2:21.28 in the boys under 19 200 metre back stroke event.

In the girls under 15 50 metre butterfly event,Kimiko Raheem from Asian International School bettered the previous meet record of 32.01 set by Hashini Mathews in the previous year clocking 30.51 Meanwhile Vinoli Siriwardena from Mahamaya College also set up a record in the same event by clocking 31.16.

K.Imesh Chathuranga from D.S.Senanayake College bettered Heshan Unamboowe’s record of 27.89 in the under 15 boys 50 metre event by clocking 27.49 seconds .

Anandian K.T.Cherantha de Silva accounted for two meet records winning the under-17 50m butterfly stroke clocking 26.11 seconds and also winning the 50 metre freestyle stroke with a timing of 24.80 seconds.

Amanda Jayasekara from Musaeus College bettered the Nadeera Jayasekara’s record of 29.55 seconds in 28.80 seconds while Machiko Rahim from AIS bettered the same record by clocking 28.98 seconds in the girls under 17 50 metre event.

Royalist Kanitha Munasinghe bettered his own record of 25.73 by finishing boys under 19 50 metre event in 24.28 seconds.

The event was organized by Sri Lanka Swimming Association and sponsored by Nestle Lanka PLC and will continue till June 21 (Friday).
