Treasure hunters fined

Nine treasure hunters were fined Rs 70,000 each when they pleaded guilty to the offence after being produced before the Matale district Magistrate's Court.

The Police told court that the nine men were digging a pit in search of a treasure.


Woman dies of snake bite

A 54-year-old mother of three stung by a snake when she went to the well to draw water, died on admission to the Dambulla Base Hospital.

The victim was identified as R.A.Karunawathi, a resident of Hubasgamuwa in the Dambulla police division. Dambulla Police are investigating.


Port warehouse fire: Two arrested

Two persons have been arrested by the Police in connection with the fire which gutted a warehouse with a large amount of stored goods at the Colombo Port in May. The damages were later valued at over Rs.50 million. Police had ealier informed court that the fire could be an act of sabotage. The Police said they were conducting further investigations.
