Horticulture villages

A total 1,500 horticulture villages will be set up in the Western, North Western and Central Provinces under the Mahinda Chinthanaya. With that 30,000 jobs will be created in the rural and suburban areas. Sri Lanka will be recognized for the quality production centres for horticulture products in the world with this project.

In cut flower production, high quality new hybrid varieties imported from overseas will be modernized with tissue culture apparatus. Due to this project, revenue from the export of cut flowers and foliage will increase significantly. Bingiriya Agri-Export Zone in the Kurunegala District was the first Agri-Export Zone established in the country in 2009.
