Electricity tariff hike:

SC refuses leave to proceed

The Supreme Court yesterday refused to grant leave to a petition filed against the recent hike in electricity tariffs.

The Bench Constituted of Chief Justice Mohan Peiris and Justice Rohini Marasinghe.

The petitioner is Lawyers for Human Rights and Development. Respondent cited interalia is the Ceylon Electricity Board.

SSC Nerin Pulle appearing for the Attorney General submitted that the low end consumers up to 60 units are not affected by the increase.

Besides the upward revision is in accordance with a 2008 Court decision. The petitioner pointed out that the there is only a marginal increase in electricity consumed by amongst others hoteliers and condominiums.
