Gateway College launched six boats and equipment to promote rowing
among its students at a ceremony held at the Colombo Rowing Club
yesterday.Thie launch will be a tremendous boost improving the overall
efficiency of time management of the students and enhance the
effectiveness of the training programme.
Rowing was introduced to Gateway only last year, adding to over 20
games and sports available to the students of the school. There has been
tremendous enthusiasm from boys and girls of all age groups to take on
this demanding sport which has prompted the management to invest in the
future of the students by acquiring the required boats. Speaking at the
occasion Director of Gateway Group Harsha Alles said most of the
students are forced to go on a rat race, always pursuing their studies
without indulging in sports which has a negative impact on children.
The idea of the Gateway College is to produce students who are not
only good in studies, but sports also so that they will turn out to be
useful citizens of society when they leave school.
The boats have been aptly named as Victory, Invincible, Challenger,
Endeavour, Yamato and Mayflower taken from the battleships of the past.
The boats acquired by the School are the very first in the country
and is bound to improve the standard of rowing at Gateway College.
The School also has plans to set up its own boat house on the
Diyawanna Oya near Water Edge which will further strengthen the capacity
to pursue this exciting sport vigorously. Managing Director Rohini Alles,
officials of Gateway College and several officials from Colombo Rowing
Club and Sri Lanka Rowing Association were also present. |
