Infant dies mother, survives

A 10 month old infant succumbed to his injuries at Kurunegala hospital ICU when his mother jumped into a well with him on Saturday. The mother, reported to be a mentally retarded person is being treated in the ICU. The incident occurred when the woman jumped into the well in Dakuna Raum Para area. Kurunegala Police are investigating.

Elephant kills farmer

A farmer in Girandurukotte died when he was attacked by elephants in a cultivation in Serupitiya on Saturday night. M Ariyadasa, 63, of Hebarawa faced the mishap when he attempted to chase away the elephants that had penetrated in to his cultivation. Girandurukottee Police are investigating.

Spate of drowning incidents

A youth in Welimada was drowned while bathing with friends in Dehiamuna Wewa, Hingurugamuwa on Sunday. He was identified as J P Sumith Nilanga, 19. Meanwhile on Vesak Poya day, a 14-year-old student of Valachchenai Sadaliya School drowned in a canal in Pothana Ela in Valachcheniei. Investigations revealed that he faced the mishap while bathing with a group of students participating in a cadeting camp conducted near the canal by his school.

Teachers and other students rushed him to Valachchenai hospital where he was pronounced dead. Meanwhile in Morawewa, a body of a fisherman drowned on Thursday was found by Morawewa Police two days later drifting towards the tank bund. The victim, 37-year-old P Gouder of Koshinna had been reported drowned while returning to the bund after fishing in the middle of the tank with another fisherman.

Meanwhile another 37-year-old man in Wawalakade drowned in a tank in Athimale while plucking lotus flowers on Poya Day. The body was handed over to his relations after the post-mortem at the Kalmunai hospital. Meanwhile Kalutara South Police reported the death of a man due to drowning while bathing in Kalu Ganga on Saturday. Chanaka Kumara, 26, of Padukka died in the incident.

Police seize hand grenade

Kalutara South Police on Sunday arrested a suspect with a foreign made hand grenade on Kumarathunga Mawatha in Kalutara South. He was remanded until June 3 when produced in Kalutara magistrate court. Meanwhile another suspect was arrested in the same area on the previous day with a locally made shot gun, three bullets and a kris knife in his possession in Kalutara town. The 31-year-old suspect, a resident of Kalutara North was produced before the Kalutara magistrate yesterday.

Suspect arrested for theft

Wennappuwa Police arrested a suspect wanted in connection with several house breaking incidents in Anuradhapura. Police reported that he had broken into three shops and houses and stolen cash and goods worth over Rs 350,000. The 30-year-old suspect, a resident of Elayapattuwa was remanded until May 31 when produced before the Marawila Magistrate.

Deadly fall into gem pit

A 27- year- old man who got into difficulty when he fell into a gem pit in Doloswala, Nivithigala, died at Wathupitiwala Hospital on Sunday. M Rajinikanth of Kolombagama died in the incident.

Meanwhile, a tractor driver who was injured after the tractor turned turtle, died at Wariyapola Hospital while receiving treatment. The incident occurred at a teak plantation while he was was dragging teak logs in his tractor. The victim was identified as B M Dissanayake,50, of Pothuhera.

Three wheeler topples killing woman

A 55 year old woman died while three others were seriously injured when a three wheeler skidded and toppled after it went off the road in Bellagaswewa, Ambalantota on Saturday. D Punchi Menike of Sooriyawewa succumbed to her injuries at the Hambantota hospital.

The driver of the three wheeler, his wife and son are also being treated in the same hospital. They were traveling from Sooriyawewa to Ambalantota when the incident occurred. Ambalantota Police are investigating.
