A suspect wanted in connection with a robbery and a murder in Walakada Road, Kosgodalla was apprehended due to the detection talents of a mastiff named Grero of the Official Dogs Unit of Horana Police on Sunday.

Police believe the suspect entered a house for robbery but was confronted by the house owner who was murdered by the robber.

The 39-year-old victim was a resident of Kosgodalla. He was alone in the house as the rest of the family was out Vesak sightseeing.

Grero who was brought to the scene by Constable Duminda of the Official Dogs Unit of the Horana Police, had followed a trail picked up from an item apparently left behind by the suspect, eventually leading the Police to a house.

Grero’s trail ended at the house where the Police arrested the suspect. Police also found a knife which was used to commit the murder and a blood stained shirt. The 29-year-old suspect is a resident of Kosgodella, Molkawa and a father of one. Investigations revealed that the suspect robbed another nearby house after this murder. Police seized a stock of jewellery and rubber sheets stolen by the suspect.

Investigations are continuing under the supervision of Kalutara SSP Roshan Fernando, ASP Baduraliya, G A S Priyankara and OIC, Baduraliya, Udaya Kumara.
