About 139 war displaced families live in these welfare camps.
The government provided basic facilities to those in welfare camps on
the instructions of Minister Devananda. However, as the minister was
told that there were several shortcomings at the welfare camps, he
instructed the Divisional Secretary of the area to provide drinking
water, electricity and dry ration in addition to improved sanitary
facilities.
Minister Devananda also instructed the Divisional Secretary to find
out uncultivated land in the area and to plan a project to cultivate
such lands with the participation of welfare camp inmates.
Devananda also instructed Palmyrah Development Board chairman
Paspathy Seevaratnam to explore the possibility of training capable
individuals in the camps in self-employment ventures in Palmyrah based
products industry. Addressing those housed in the camps, the minister
assured that they will be resettled in Mylatti, Veemamgamain, Palay and
Kankesanturai.
