The Anuradhapura Urban Council has embarked on a Pivithuru Purawaraya
(Clean City) city development programme, with the aim of creating a
pleasant and environment friendly locality. The project, a brain child
of Mayor H.P. Somadasa is sponsored and supervised by the Sakthi
Volunteer Organization.
Mayor Somadasa said that the main objective of the project was to
mould an awakened and healthy city community, projecting the city's
natural resources and eradicating diseases carrying mosquitoes.
It has been planned to create awareness among the 900 family units
dwelling within the city limits, on the themes of environment
preservation, cleanliness, beautification, tree planting, garbage
management and home gardening.
A steering committee with the active participation of Divisional
Secretaries, the Police Environmental Unit and the 15 Grama Niladaris of
the UC jurisdictions will be appointed to spearhead the Pivithuru
Purawaraya venture. Somadasa explained that this move would help
immensely to save the major reservoirs such as Tisawewa and Nuwara Wewa,
which supply drinking water to a 150,000 city population, threatened
with large scale contamination. |
