Big demand for nursing staff in US - Minister

If universities in this country do not use modern technology to prepare job-oriented students and armed with knowledge to suit new trends, they will become institutions merely churning out unemployed graduates, said Senior Minister for International Monetary Co-operation and Finance and Planning Deputy Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama.

He was addressing a meeting after opening the Rangamuwa Kanishta Vidyalaya in Hataraliyadde, which was re-developed as a child-friendly school recently.

Dr. Amunugama said that there was a big demand for Nursing staff which carry high salaries, in countries like the United States. Nursing has become a rewarding profession and universities in that country conduct Nursing Training courses as well. A mere arts degree from a local university was today insufficient to find a lucrative job.

IT knowledge was essential for a graduate even to fit into a teaching or clerical job. Therefore our children should be prepared to face the modern world by moving away from the obsolete system of education. Galagedara Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Lala Girinagama also spoke.
