Supermarkets in overpricing scandal

* Raids conducted on 33 outlets

* Legal action against management

The Consumer Affairs Authority yesterday commenced raiding all supermarkets in the country, following complaints that vegetables and fruits are sold above the displayed price.

CAA Chairman Rumy Marzook said the Authority received a number of public complaints about supermarkets in various parts of the country where vegetables and fruits are sold beyond the prices on display.

The CAA flying squad raided over 33 supermarkets in Colombo, Gampaha, Kandy, Galle, Kurunegala, Kalutara, Kelaniya, Matara and Nuwara Eliya yesterday and detected several supermarkets where vegetables and fruits were sold way beyond the displayed price.

Marzook added that the Authority will take legal action against the errant supermarket managements.

He said the Authority is always prepared to take every possible step to protect the consumers.

“Any trader violating the provisions of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act would face legal action,” the CAA chief added.
