City Naturalist Award launched

Cinnamon Nature Trails (Kids Club) in collaboration with Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo will be launching the City Naturalist Award for children aged 9-15 this April. The City Naturalist Award is designed to inspire children to be passionate about nature and conservation. Whilst teaching children about nature in the city, the programme also focuses on developing environmental awareness, responsibility and additional skills such as team work, leadership, creativity, photography, public speaking and communication skills.

The award consists of three lessons where each month one class is held focusing on a particular nature subject. The first lesson (Celebrate nature) will focus on teaching children to appreciate the various flora and fauna found in the city with them participating in an art and craft session and learning basic photography. The second lesson (Learn about Nature) will include an educational talk followed by a detailed study of birds and butterflies found around Colombo. Children will have to make their own ID kit and participate in group presentations highlighting what they've learnt. The final lesson (Share Nature) will include a field trip to a nearby Cinnamon Estate, where children will be able to conduct assessed nature walks drawing on all the knowledge they have acquired in the previous lessons.

The City Naturalist Award will be on April 28, May 19 and June 9 from 3pm to 5.30pm at Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo. Children must attend all three lessons to complete the award successfully and obtain their City Naturalist Award and Badge.

This award is conducted by Cinnamon Nature Trails with adult supervision provided for all three lessons and conducted by a team who has extensive experience working with children and school groups.

Conducted by leading experts in Ecotourism, this award provides an opportunity for children to learn from some of the best naturalists in the country about nature, how to respect it whilst developing a key set of skills to enhance their academic and personal development. Each lesson requires children to practice their thinking, speaking, and teamwork and communication skills with confidence.

The award also teaches children the importance of striving towards a goal and upon completion will provide them with a great sense of accomplishment.

For more information on the course please call on 0770-221321 or 2306816.
