William Weerasinghe Memorial Trophy Rugby:
Rajans take on defending champs Kingswood at Bogambara
S M Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sport Corr
The high riding Dharmaraja College will lock horns with their
traditional rivals Kingswood College in their schools ‘A’ Division rugby
tournament match to be played at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy this
Friday, April 26 with the kick off scheduled for 4.30 pm.
This match will be also played for William Weerasinghe Memorial
Trophy and K Weerasinghe will be the Chief Guest. Also gracing the
occasion will be for Mahesh Weerasinghe who play rugby for the Rajans
and later excelled in motor racing, driving a Honda V Tec in road races
and hill climbs. He also held the post of Honorary Secretary of the
Champion Rugby Club, Kandy Sports Club.
This match though down in the fixture was not played last year as the
Kingswoodians wound up their rugby earlier than other schools and a
tournament clash was not possible as the two schools were grouped in two
different segments. Kingswood College in Division One Segment ‘A’ and
Dharmaraja College in Segment ‘B’. Thus these two schools are compelled
to play each other this season.
The Kingswoodians are the current holders of the William Weerasinghe
Memorial Trophy but they will face an uphill task in retaining for
another year as the Rajans are unbeaten but the Kingswoodians have lost
matches.
But in a traditional match the outcome is difficult to predict as
often the underdogs come out on top as witnessed in last week’s
Trinity-Thomian match when the ‘Thoras’ upset all predictions to post an
exciting win.
