Disease hit coconut trees removed

About 4,000 coconut trees affected by a disease were cut off, said
Coconut Development Board Regional Manager W.M.S.W. Bandara.
He said coconut trees in Tangalle, Walasmulla and Okewela Divisional
Secretariat areas have been affected by the disease. He said the only
solution to prevent the spread of the disease is to remove the affected
trees.
It has been prohibited to transport coconuts and trunks of coconut
trees to other parts of the district from the affected areas.
Artificial limbs made in Tangalle

The Tangalle Nava Jeewana disabled rehabilitation centre turns out
artificial limbs for the disabled. Workers engaged in producing the
artificial limbs have been trained in a foreign country, said Nava
Jeewana chairman Kumarini Wikramasooriya.
Man drowns in Menik Ganga

A 30-year-old died after drowning at Menik Ganga. The deceased was
identified as Krishna Dharshana of Eravur.
His body is lying at the Kataragama Base Hospital.
Paddy harvesting machine set on fire

A paddy harvesting machine known as Boothaya was set on fire at
Guruwala in Angunakolapelessa, Police said.
The machine is valued at Rs 1,600,000.
No suspects have been arrested
WB fund for Chest Hospital in Hambantota

A new chest hospital will be set up in Hambantota. It will be set up
close to the new general hospital being constructed in Hambantota.
It will be funded by the World Bank , said Health Services Director,
Hambantota Dr U P Malaka Chandra Kumara.
Commuters complain

The new bus stand at Embilipitiya has no facilities, commuters
complain. They said there are no sufficient seats for commuters at the
bus stand.
Commuters also complain of stray dogs and beggars at the bus stop.
Singithi Bak Maha Ulela

The Singithi Bak Maha Ulela of the Carlton Group of Pres-schools was
held recently.
Pre-school children from Tangalle, Ranna, Walasmulla, Beliatta and
Weeraketiya participated in the Sigithi Bak Maha Ulela. First Lady
Shiranthi Rajapaksa was also present at the ceremony.
