NTPC to sign deal for Sampur power plant
NTPC Ltd, state-run electricity generator in India said a deal for
Sampur power plant Project in Sri Lanka will be concluded within this
week.
Telegraph India quoted NTPC Chairman and Managing Director Arup Roy
Choudhury saying that a delegation from Sri Lanka would be in India this
week to wrap up talks on Sampur project. Officials from both sides had
recently met to discuss the power purchase and implementation agreements
for the 2x250MW imported coal-based project at Sampur.
The Sampur Coal Power Station is a large coal-fired power station
currently under construction in Sampur, Trincomalee and Sri Lanka. The
Government has agreed that, after the commissioning of this power
station, no more coal-fired power stations will be commissioned in Sri
Lanka. Making this and the Norocholai Coal Power Station, the only two
coal-fired power stations in Sri Lanka.
Due to the increasing demand for electricity in the Eastern Province,
it had been decided to establish a coal based power plant of 2×250 MW
capacity in Sampur in the Trincomalee district at a total investment of
around US $ 500 million. The joint venture partners for this project are
the Ceylon Electricity Board and National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd
of India.
