Science on course for a fine rugby season
Science College, after a scintillating performance to win against
last year’s A division runners up Royal College, hope to carry on the
momentum for many more such efforts during the 2013 season in the
schools ‘A’ Division.

Introduced to Rugby in the late 70’s when they were known as
Sattisasra Vidyalaya, Science College first tasted victory in the big
league when they scored a win over their hometown rivals S. Thomas’ 16-0
way back in 1980. Since then, Science College has produced two national
rugby captains and a host of national and club players.
Yet their record in the schools rugby tournament over the years has
been sporadic in nature with a quarter-final berth in 1990 and a
finalist position in 1997 to show for their efforts until a few years
ago.
Since 2011 though the situation has been drastically different. With
the team stepping into the ‘A’ Division a couple of years back, they
have proved to be more than a match for some big names in schools rugby.
Science College created the biggest upset of the season yet by
beating the much fancied Royal College outfit by 36 – 19 season opener
and narrowly missed winning against Trinity College, Kandy (11-18). The
team hopes to hold its composure to end at the top of the A division
table during the 2013 Schools Rugby Season.
“We are thankful for the support given by Dialog Axiata PLC for the
2013 season by providing a generous playing jersey sponsorship to us ”
said Mohan de Silva , President of the Science College Rugby Support
Group. “The team hopes to put up a good show during the season and
finish strong” added de Silva. |
