Novices Carrom Championship:

Royalist Anas wins a double

Anas Ahamed of Royal College, Colombo won a double crown by winning the men's singles championship while winning the doubles title with his school mate Mohamed Shaheed in the mid-year Novices Carrom Championship concluded at the Carrom Federation building, Maharagama on Sunday.

Two young Royalists battled it out for supremacy in the men's singles final where 16-year Anas bagged the tittle beating his school-mate Mohamed Shaheed 25/19, 14/26, 25/23 after a tough contest. Even though Anas comfortably won the first set he experienced a shocking set back in the following set where his opponent won with ease. The third set saw an exciting contests with both players using all their skills to overcome the other and ultimately Anas succeeded with a narrow margin.

But the two Royalists had an easy win over two Old Cambrinas, Pamod Ashendra and Lahiru Perera in their final quest for the doubles crown. They beat the opponents in straight sets 25/18, 25/4

The women's singles title was won by another young budding slicer, Detuni Nomaya from Dharmapala College, Pannipitiya who defeated Gayani Ranasinghe of Girls High School, Kandy 25/10, 25/22 in the final.

Sumalya Vidanagama and Kusalya Vidanagama of Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Pannipitiya won the women's doubles championship by beating Tinali Janeesha and Hashani Dilrukshika 25/19, 25/21 in the final.

Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL) conducted the event and it was an open tournament for all non-rankers. Significantly number of school participants were very high and most of the winners and runner-ups were school players.

Results of the finals -

Men's Singles: Anas Ahamed beat Mohamed Shaheed (both from Royal College - under 17) - 25/19, 14/26. 25/23

Men's Doubles: Anas Ahamed/Mohamed Shaheed beat Pamod Ashendra/Lahiru Perera (Old Boys Prince of Wales) 25/18, 25/4

Women's Singles: Detuni Nomaya (Dharmapala Pannipitiya) beat Gayani Ranasinghe (Girls High School, Kandy) 25/10, 25/22

Women's Doubles: Sumalya Vidanagama/Kusalya Vidanagama (Dharmapala) beat Tinali Janeesha/Hashani Dilrukshika 25/19, 25/21
