Undeclared consignment of Ethanol:
Suspect re-remanded till April 14

Additional Magistrate Sandun Withana yesterday re remanded a suspect
till April 14. He was taken into custody in connection with the
undeclared consignment of Ethanol imported under false declarations and
in violation of Customs Ordinance in two containers taken into custody
by the customs.
The suspect in this case is Ranga Dharshana Samarakkody. Customs
Superintendent W. G. Nanayakkara informed that the
\Government Analyst report in respect of the contents in the
containers has not been received.
However, the test report issued from another scientific institution
say that one of the containers possess 96 per cent ethanol and not Rosin
Resin acid as declared.
The other contains 96 percent Ethanol and not Sulphate Turpentine as
declared.
With the tax levy of Rs. 23,479,659.00 the total value of the
consignment is Rs. 31,868,894.00
In suspect’s statement, a Singapore national named Zaing Lee is
mentioned as the person illegally remitting money to Sri Lanka.
Further investigations reveal that the suspect had connived with a
private sector entity to import Ethanol using false documents.
