‘Massive campaign to create public opinion against govt’

A massive campaign is under way in the country to create public opinion against the government in the backdrop of an adverse campaign launched by the LTTE proxies against Sri Lanka internationally. An international media organization which has an office in Colombo has also launched a similar campaign within the country to portray the world that there is no free of media in the country, said military spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasuriya. He was speaking at an interaction with the journalists at the Press Institute of Sri Lanka.

According to Wanigasuriya, the Colombo office of this media organization has started a campaign to visit media institutions and inquire journalists individually whether the country has freedom of media. “They are conducting hypothesis generating interviews to uphold the fact that the country does not have media freedom”, he said.

He said that a team has gone to different media institutions and interviewed the journalists on camera. Wanigasuriya added that the journalists have full freedom to express their opinions. He said that he there was no instance where journalists were barred from carrying out their duties.
