A massive campaign is under way in the country to create public
opinion against the government in the backdrop of an adverse campaign
launched by the LTTE proxies against Sri Lanka internationally. An
international media organization which has an office in Colombo has also
launched a similar campaign within the country to portray the world that
there is no free of media in the country, said military spokesman
Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasuriya. He was speaking at an interaction with the
journalists at the Press Institute of Sri Lanka.
According to Wanigasuriya, the Colombo office of this media
organization has started a campaign to visit media institutions and
inquire journalists individually whether the country has freedom of
media. “They are conducting hypothesis generating interviews to uphold
the fact that the country does not have media freedom”, he said.
He said that a team has gone to different media institutions and
interviewed the journalists on camera. Wanigasuriya added that the
journalists have full freedom to express their opinions. He said that he
there was no instance where journalists were barred from carrying out
their duties.
