Avurudu Tradition with Arpico Supercentre
In the festive backdrop of the melodious call of the Cuckoo and the
blooming of the Erabadu flower heralding the Sinhala and Tamil New Year,
Arpico Supercentre; the largest hyper market in Sri Lanka takes pleasure
in celebrating the festivities together with its patrons.
Age-old Sri Lankan festive traditions are revived this Sinhala and
Tamil New Year at Arpico Supercentres Hydepark Corner and Wattala;
facilitating Arpico customers with special Avurudu zones from March 23
to April 12th. The concept of special Avurudu zones is the value added
extension of the 'Dolos Mahe Free Shopping' promotion where over 100
winners stand a chance of bagging up to 12 months of free shopping.
Celebrating in the customs of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, Arpico
offers its city-dwelling customers a real taste of the rural Sri Lankan
culture, abundant with seasonal celebration. A mud hut, put up in the
special avurudhu zones with an elderly Amme making konda kavum and other
traditional sweetmeats not only will signify the simplicity of the
conventional April festivities in the country, but also serve as a
resting area for Arpico customers. This will also give the chance for
the young generation of Arpico-goers to observe rural utensils used in
traditional Sri Lankan kitchens such as the pestle and mortar,
'ilapatha' and the overhead fire- wood storage area or the 'dara massa',
to name a few.
The highlight of the Arpico shoppers Avurudhu experience will be on
April 6 at Hyde Park Corner and on April 7th in Wattala, when they
transform into vibrant, traditional New Year competition zones with
shoppers given the opportunity to participate and win prizes and
surprises throughout the day in events such as kana mutti bidima,
aliyata eha thabima, tug of war, gunny-bag race, kotta pora, lime- on-
the- spoon race, raban gasima, wheel barrow race, andayata kiri kawima,
onchili padiima, and the crowning of the avurudu kumara and kumariya.
