Commentaries on Living IV by Angelo de Mel

Photographer Angelo de Mel's sixth solo exhibition Commentaries on Living IV is presented by the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) Colombo in association with the Tagore Society of Sri Lanka at the ICC from April 4 to 7. The inauguration will be held on April 4 at 6 pm at the Centre located at 16/2, Gregory's Road, Colombo 7. The exhibition will remain open from April 5 to 7 from 10 am to 6 pm.

Photographer de Mel has a knack for giving a meaning to his photographs that lifts it soemtimes to the realm of philosophy. This he does by giving a title taken from a work of literature or from a religious text. A case in point is the picture entitled "The vanishing footsteps of life upon the shifting sands of time" which is a graphically stunning depiction of the ephemeralness of life itself.

The present exhibition contains 80 colour and black and white photographs which he has taken since his last exhibition at the Art Gallery in 2010 under the same title. Angelo de Mel hails from Moratuwa, and had his education at St.Sebastian's College, in his home town, where he picked up his photography. In 1955, he teamed up with soem of his classmates who were movie mad as himself at that time and produced the first ever children's film made entirely by children in Sri Lanka which was Ceylon at that time. He still travels widely around the country off the beaten track in search of pictures of people as they are straight from the flow of life.

The exhibition promises to be treat for the eye as well the mind.
