President Mahinda visits historic Wewurukannala Rajapaha Viharaya

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday went on an inspection tour of
the development work being carried out at the historic Wewurukannala
Rajapaha Viharaya and participate in religious observances at the Vihara.
The President also also called on Wewurukannala Rajamaha Vihara Chief
Incumbent Ven. Dikwelle Thissa Nayaka Thera and held discussions over
the development plans of the Vihara site.
The President pointed out the importance of carrying out development
work while protecting the ancient heritage sites.
He commended the present Chief Incumbent of the Vihara for the
valuable service rendered to the Buddha Sasana and literature.
The Wewurukannal Rajamaha Vihara which has a long history with
diverse historical significances has immensely contributed to the
country’s social, religious and educational service for many years.
The old image house that belongs to Kandyan period “Sujanakaththa
Patimala”, a unique large temple, 100 cubits tall Buddha Statue, large
clock built by a Sinhalese, the basement temple that depicts Hell, a two
storied library which also houses an art gallery, a large “Dahamma Sala”
made out of wood and many other large buildings are housed at this
Viharaya premises.
Devinuwara Srilanka Freedom Party Organizer Kanchana Wijesekara was
also present.
