Three-wicket Herath puts Bangladesh in spin
Ranjan Anandappa
Bangladesh squandered on a strong foundation laid by their openers
Tamim Iqbal (59) and Jahurul Islam (48) who put on 91 runs for the first
wicket which is a record for the visitors against Sri Lanka.
Visitors were able to obtain a 52-run lead as they were 158 for 4 in
their second innings at close on the third day of the second Test at the
R.Premamdasa Stadium yesterday In reply to Bangladesh first innings
score of 240, Sri Lanka were 294 for 6 overnight and were all out for
346 with a lead of 106 runs.
Left arm leg spinner Rangana Herath put the home side in a strong
position when he struck twice in one over to account for Jahurul Islam
(48) smartly stumped by Dinesh Chandimal and then rattling the stumps of
Muhmudullah in successive deliveries when the visitors looked set for a
challenging target.
After the rousing start given by the Bangladesh openers Tamim Iqbal
and Jahurul Islam , one drop bat Mohammad Ashraful was bowled by Herath
for four in the third ball after tea and the Bangladesh batting looked
feeble. The visitors would have been in a worst plight if the catches
offered by Mominul Haque dropped by Kulasekera and skipper Rahim
reprieved by Mthews in the slips were taken. Mominul Haque playing only
in his second Test match batted well to be unbeaten 36 after facing 89
deliveries and Mushfiqur Rahim was 7 n.o.
Resuming from there 294 for 6 overnight score, Sri Lanka could not
make much headway in the morning. Sangakkara and Kulasekera looking out
to build a substantial first innings lead were unable to do so. The
seventh wicket pair added 36 runs when the hard working Abdul Hasan got
the centurion Sangakkara when he jabbed at a full-length delivery and
snicked one to wicket keeper Mushfiqur Rahim. Sangakkara stood his
ground and the head on umpire Richard Illingworth after consulting his
colleague Nigel Long both from England, referred the final verdict to
the third umpire who ruled Sangakkara out. His monumental innings came
to an end after his 438-minute vigil at the crease facing 289 deliveries
and 11 boundaries to his name.
With the dismissal of Sangakkara it was left to Nuwan Kulasekera who
played second fiddle while batting with Sangakkara to up the tempo and
increase the lead. But Kulasekera at 22 after facing seventy five
deliveries snicked one while playing forward to Sohag Gazi and left
hander Rangana Herath followed suit beaten and bowled by Gazi to give
his third wicket. Shaminda Eranga struck three boundaries which included
a delightful square cut for his top Test score of 15 after facing thirty
six deliveries and Sri Lanka were finally out for 346.
