Fined for dumping garbage
Nimal Jayasingha - Gampaha Roving
Two women were fined Rs 5,000 each by Gampaha by Gampaha Additional
Magistrate and District Judge Indika Shehan Attanayake for dumping
garbage on the road in the Bandiyamulla area.
The suspect women were produced by the Environmental Unit of the
Gampaha Police were fined.
Dies in accident
Sabaragamuwa group corr.
One person died and four others were injured and admitted to the
Kegalle General Hospital when a van in which they were travelling from
Kandy to Colombo crashed into a stationary lorry at Bellapathe
Galigamuwa on March 15.
The deceased was identified as Sub Inspertor H.M. Sunil of the
Colombo Police Foreign Print Bureau. The four injured are also his
colleagues at the Bureau. The body was sent to the Kegalle Hospital
morgue for an autopsy. Kegalle Police is investigating.
Ven. Vanawasi Rahula Thera celebrates b’day on March 20
The Founder of the National Namal Uyana Ven. Vanawasi Rahula will
celebrate his 59th birthday on March 20. He is the only Bhikkhu to have
been honoured with a President’s Award in 1994 for his dedicated
services to protect the environment. Ven. Vanawasi Rahula Thera has also
been honoured by local and foreign organisations in the past.
A special Pinkama will be held at 7 pm on March 20 at the Namal Uyana
organised by the Namal Uyana Trustees.
AGM
The Annual General Meeting of the Association of the Peradeniya
University will be held on March 24, 2013 commencing at 9.30 a.m. at the
E.O.E. Perera Auditorium, Faculty of Engineering, University of
Peradeniya under the patronage of D.G. Uswattearatchi (Ph.D. Cambridge
1965), an eminent alumnus of the University of Peradeniya (B.A.
Economics 1958). The guest of honour will be Peradeniya University Vice
Chancellor Prof. Atula Senaratne.
The AGM will be followed by lunch and fellowship at the faculty of
Engineering for AAUP members, their guests and other alumni of the

Student drowns
Batticaloa group corr.
A 13-year-old student named Kasun was drowned while he was bathing in
the sea off Pasikudah beach with a group of collogues from a leading
school in Mawanella on Saturday. Police investigating the incident said
the students had been bathing in a prohibited area along the coast.
Killed by lightning
A watcher in a private estate in Diddeniya died after being struck by
lightning. The victims is 60-year-old R M Premadasa of Giriulla. The
body was sent to the Padukka hospital morgue for the post mortem.
Hanwella Police are investigating.
Two drowned
Two youths drowned while bathing with their friends in the Mahaweli
Ganga and at Wellawatte beach on Sunday evening.
Danaraj Navidaran (20) of Agarapathana died while bathing in the
Mahaweli Ganga in Kalupalama, Panideniya on Sunday. The other, Mohommad
Kamzi (20) Dematagoda was dragged away by the currents while bathing in
the sea in Wellawatte. Police are searching for the body. |
