The staff and students of the Chitra Lane School for the Special
Child, celebrated their Annual Sports Meet recently. The event was held
at the Henry Pedris Ground in Colombo 5. Chief Guest Director of Special
Education, H P N Lakshman and Governor of the the Lions' Club 306 C2
Homagama Centre, Gamini Jayasinghe was the main sponsor, presided over
the event.
Every one of the 180 students had a chance to participate in the
day's activities, which ranged from track and field events to obstacle
course races. The best female athlete for the day was Ashini Prabodhini
(15 years), whilst the best male athlete was Sahan Sandeepa (17 years).
They each received first place in their respective track, field and
obstacle course events.
The School, located on Chitra Lane in Colombo 5, caters for children
with special needs, aged between five and 21 years. Children with Down's
syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy and a host of other medical
complications, are provided with a comprehensive Special Education
Programme, which targets the development of Sensory and Cognitive
Skills, Creative Arts, Sports and Vocational Training.
The Chitra Lane School for the Special Child will soon be celebrating
45 years of care and service to children with special needs. The Chitra
Lane Children's Resource Centre has a multi-disciplinary team of
consultants that provides comprehensive diagnostic and intervention
services for children with special needs, as well as training for
parents on providing help at home.
The Chitra Lane Sheltered Workshop provides a caring environment for
young adults with special needs, to learn a vocational skill and earn an
