School canteens under microscope

Steps are being taken to inspect school canteens in the North Western Province after parents complained to the Education Ministry over the sale of unhygienic food items to students by canteen owners, said Kurunegala District Medical Officer S M A Priyadarshana.

The Health Ministry collected Rs 21 million by way of fines by filing cases against hotel owners who had sold food items unfit for human consumption last year.


NWP roads developed

Six hundred and fifty kilometres of highways belonging to the North Western Provincial Council have been developed during 2012.

The Economic Development Ministry in collaboration with the Provincial Highways Ministry developed 421 kilometres of highways in the Kurunegala district and 219 kilometres of highways in the Puttalam district.

Rs 7,000 million has been spent for the project.


Assistance for turmeric, ginger growers

The Export Agriculture Department will grant financial assistance to turmeric and ginger growers in the Kurunegala district.

They will be provided best quality seeds at a reasonable price. It has been planned to cultivate ginger in 250 acres and turmeric in 120 acres in the district, said Agriculture Assistant Director L M J K Lindara. More details could be obtained from district Agriculture Assistant Director’s office at No. 10, Wilgoda road, Kurunegala.


Rukada Rajje in Horana

The stage drama Rukada Rajje will be staged at the Sripali Hall, Horana on March 17 at 2.30 pm and 5.30 pm in aid of Sumithuro Welfare Society of Paragastota.


Teacher felicitation

The annual get-together of the Past Pupils’ Association of Panadura Balika Maha Vidyalaya will be held on March 17 fro 9.30 am at the school’s Subhavi Hall.

Teachers retiring after serving the school for a long time, will be felicitated.


Menaka, chairman Lanka Coal (Pvt) Limited

Menaka Liyanage has been appointed Chairman Lanka Coal (Pvt) Limited, a subsidiary of Ceylon Electricity Board by President Mahinda Rajapaksa with immediate effect.

He is the son of Chairman Fishery Harbour Corporation Upali Liyanage, and the grand-son of former MP, the late Dhanapala Weerasekera.
