Janadhipathi Vidyalaya, Nawala clinched the all island schools girls
under 19 hockey championship when they beat Sangamitta Balika Vidyalaya
from the hockey town of Matale 2-0 in the finals of the hockey
championship organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Association and
played at Jaffna College grounds, Jaffna yesterday. At half time there
was no scoring.
The winner after a quiet start made their impression clear with some
fine stick work through their forwards who made several attempts to
penetrate their opponents and succeeded in the 10th minute of the second
half through centre forward Sandani Dilhara who sounded the brands.
With the Sangamitta girls staging a fight back, the Janadhipathi
Vidyalaya decided to insultate themselves from an equaliser and scored
their second goal through centre half Thushani Sachintaka which put the
issue beyond doubt.
D J Pragath and P N Cramer umpire. The defending champion Seetha Devi
Balika Vidyalaya won the consolation trophy by defeating their home town
rivals St Anthony's Girls College, Kandy by the big margin of 4-0 after
leading 2-0 at the lemons.
Goal scorers for Seetha Devi BV were Wathsala Jayasinghe (1), Sapuni
Guruge (1), Samudra Chandrika (1) and Nilusha Weerasinghe (1).
In the semi-finals Sangamitta BV beat St Anthony's BV 2-0 and
Janadhipathi Vidyalaya beat Seetha Devi BV 2-0. |
