Illicit saw mill run by Principal raided

Medawachchiya Police raided an illicit timber saw mill belonging to a
school Principal at Wahamalgollewa on February 24 and seized a two wheel
tractor, mobile saw mill and a stock of sawn timber. Police said the
Principal of a school in Medawachchiya fled during the raid.
Investigations are continuing.
Minister celebrates birthday
Water Supply and Drainage Minister, Government Chief Whip and MEP
Leader Dinesh Gunawardena will be 64 years today.
He is the son of former minister and MEP Leader Philip Gunawardena
and former MP Kusuma Gunawardena. Born in 1949 as the fourth child of
the Gunawardena family, he had his education at Royal College, Colombo
and Origon University, USA. He was first elected as a Member of
Parliament in 1983 representing the Maharagama electorate. He was
honoured with 'Catholica' title by the Spanish government recently in
recognition of his contribution towards maintaining good relations among
nations.
Opening of Excise Assistant Commissioner's Office
The Excise Assistant Commissioner's Office at Kalutara will be opened
on March 4 under the patronage of International Monetary Co-operation
Senior Minister and Finance and Planning Deputy Minister Dr Sarath
Amunugama.
Port and Highways Project Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardana and
Provincial Council and Pradeshiya Sabha members will also participate.
Musical extravaganza, art exhibition
Nalani Mohotti Aarachchi's Arunaroda musical extravaganza and
Lakshman Hettiarachchi's art exhibition will be held today at the
Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya, Kiribathgoda.
It will be held under the patronage of musician Victor Ratnayake and
artist Kingsley Gunatilleka.
Education Ministry Aesthetic Education Director Thushara Gunatillaka,
Western Province Aesthetic Education Director Nandasena Katuwawala and
Kelaniya Zone Education Director H M Chandradasa will also participate.
RC Batch website launch
The launch of Royal College Class of 2003 batch website
www.rcgroupof2003.org. will be held on March 5 at 6.30 pm at the Royal
College Union, Colombo 7.
The introduction of the Membership Privilege Card of Group 2003 will
also be held on the same day.
Awards ceremony
The awards ceremony and the inauguration of the Diploma in Forensic
Medicine and Science course for legal professionals will be held today
at 9.30 am at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo.
Supreme Court Judge Priyasath Dep will be the Chief Guest. Acting
Vice Chancellor Professor T R Ariyarathna, Medical Faculty Dean
Professor Rohan Jayasekara and Diploma in Forensic Medicine and Science
Programme coordinator Dr Jean Perera will also participate.
The inaugural lecture will be delivered by Senior Professor of
Forensic Medicine and Toxicology Professor Ravindra Fernando.
Industrial Security Foundation AGM
The 21st Annual General Meeting of the Industrial Security Foundation
(Sri Lanka) Inc will be held at the Otters Aquatic Club, 380/1,
Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7 on March 22 at 6 pm.
Cumaratunga commemoration
The 69th Cumaratunga commemoration ceremony organized by the
Cumaratunga Munidasa Vision Development Committee and the Wewrukandala
Sinhala Society will be held at Indigasara on March 2 at 1.30 p.m
Amarapura Siri Suddharmarma Mahanayake Ven. Ahungalle Siri Seelavisuddhi
Thera will preside.
Highlights include the unveiling of the newly installed Cumaratunga
Munidasa statue and an oratorical and poetry contest at Vidyatunga
Privena and Asoka Maha Vidyalaya from 9.30 a.m to 4.30 p.m.
Dog menace in Jaffna
Jaffna special corr
Thirty persons sought treatment for dog bite at Jaffna Teaching
Hospital on 26 February. They included persons bitten by stray dogs and
domesticated dogs. Sixteen had died of rabies in 2010 and 14 in 2011 in
the Northern Province, according to statistics from the Jaffna Teaching
Hospital.
