Water cut in Colombo

A water cut will be in operation in several areas in Colombo tomorrow from 8 am to Sunday 8 am, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board said yesterday. The affected areas are Fort, Pettah, Maligawatte Housing Scheme, areas receiving water from Maharoof Water Tank, Hulftsdorp Road, Panchikawatte and all by roads. The water supply will be interrupted in several areas from Bambalapitiya junction to Kollupitiya Junction.


Catholic Eucharistic Miracle Exhibition in Colombo

The Exhibition of Catholic Eucharistic Miracles will be opened by Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo Rt Rev Dr Emmaneule Fernando today at 9 am. This is the first time the Catholic Church approved Holy Eucharist Miracles in Sri Lanka within the South Asian region.

The exhibits will provide information in English, Sinhala and Tamil and images depicting miracles and locations. Other incidents of interest will be presented on display boards. The exhibition is held to increase the faith of the devotees to the Holy Eucharist. Plans are also underway to hold this exhibition in parishes and shrines.


De La Salle Hall opening

The newly constructed De La Salle Hall of De Mazenod College, Kandana will be blessed and opened by Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo Most Rev Dr Emmanuel Fernando on March 3 at 10 am.

Provincial Visitor of De La Salle Brothers of Sri Lanka Very Rev Brother Denzil Perera and Urban Development Authority chairman Nimal Perera are among the distinguished invitees.


Slide lecture

A slide lecture titled 'The World Heritage City of Anuradhapura' by Ashley de Vos will be presented at the Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo on March 8 at 6 p m at 16/2, Gregory's Road, Colombo 7.

The talk will cover an introduction to the evolution of the city from its beginnings in 500 BC to its destruction in 10 C ADE including a re-creation of an important element in the 8 C ADE. All are welcome.

Awards ceremony

The awards ceremony and the inauguration of the Diploma in Forensic Medicine and Science course for legal professionals will be held tomorrow at 9.30 am at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo.

Supreme Court Judge Priyasath Dep will be the Chief Guest. Acting Vice Chancellor Professor T R Ariyarathna, Medical Faculty Dean Professor Rohan Jayasekara and Diploma in Forensic Medicine and Science Programme coordinator Dr Jean Perera will also participate. The inaugural lecture will be delivered by Senior Professor of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology Professor Ravindra Fernando.


Medical camp

A free medical camp organised by 'Suhada Mithuro Welfare Society', Pothuarawa, Malabe in collaboration with the Local Health Director's office will be held tomorrow at 8.30 am at Sri Subhodharamaya Temple, Pothuarawa.


Public talk by Indian monk Ven Rahula Bodhi

A public talk on ‘The Revival of Buddhism in India’ will be delivered by Indian Buddhist monk Ven Dr. Bhadant Rahula Bodhi Maha Thera today at 4 pm at the Maha Bodhi Society Headquarters, Ven Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Mawatha, Maradana, Colombo 10. The talk sponsored by the Maha Bodhi Society at the request of the Indo – Sri Lanka Buddhist Network will deal with the historical legacy of two great pioneers of the Buddhist Revival movement in India, namely, Anagarika Dharmapala, the first global Buddhist missionary and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, the father of the Indian Constitution, among others, and discuss the potential and ramifications of the growing Indian Buddhist population which is estimated to be in the vicinity of 70 – 90 million people.

Maha Bodhi Society President Ven Banagala Upatissa Nayaka Thera will preside.Ven. Rahula Bodhi arrived in the island as the leader of an eight member Indian Buddhist delegation last week at the invitation of Dr Lilaknath Weerasinghe, President ‘Success Sri Lanka’ based in Kandy and its membership, which hosted the delegation during their stay in Kandy and Colombo in conjunction with assistance provided mainly by the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress and co – ordinated by the German Dharmaduta Society (in association with the Indo – Sri Lanka Buddhist Network), all of which entities constitute Regional Centres of the World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB).

The primary purpose of the visit of the Indian delegation is to strengthen ties between the Buddhists of the two countries and bring India and Sri Lanka closer to each other through the historical bond and civilizational link of Buddhism.

The installation of a statue in Colombo in honour of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, the Indian Buddhist savant, was also explored. The Indian Buddhist delegation also met President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Maha Nayaka Theros of the Malwatta and Asgiriya Chapters, among others.


Ameenathul Raufa Hafeel celebrates 90th birthday today

Ameenathul Raufa Hafeel, matriarch of Hafeel family, who celebrates her 90th birthday today has played multifaceted roles in her life dutiful wife, devoted mother and much loved grand and great grandmother. She has been the unifying force of and an asset to the family. She is the daughter of Islamic scholar, late Captain S.L. Mohamed J.P., author of Practical Islam, rendered honorary services by teaching students of Greenland College, Presbyterian Girls ‘School, Clifton Girls’ School and Khairiya Girl’s School.

Her mother Noor Hafeela was the grand niece of Sir Mohamed Macan Markar. Under their care and guidance she had a happy and enlightened upbringing which has stood her in good stead throughout her life in bringing up her only son and daughter. Her marriage to the late Dr. M.H.M Hafeel J.P. , lecturer at Indigenous School of Medicine, recipient of Vidya Nidhi, the Presidential Award in 1991, turned out to be a long lasting, loving and eventful married life. She was a tower of strength and an inspiration to her husband’s academic and professional achievement.

She attributes her healthy long life to a stress free social and spiritual living coupled with love and affection from daughter, Rizya Shaideen (wife of late Dr. Faizal Shaideen ), son Rizwy Hafeel and daughter in law Riaaya Shaideen Hafeel , grand and great grand children. She positively personifies mensana in corporisano (healthy mind in a healthy body) and animasana in corporisano (healthy soul in a healthy body).


Help him

Asoka Liyanage, 60, a retired school Principal of Pathirana stores, Mapalana, Kamburupitiya is suffering from acute end stage renal failure. Consultant Nephrologist Dr Anura Hewageegana who is treating him has recommended an urgent kidney transplant to save his life.

The surgery is estimated to cost Rs 2 million.

Liyanage says being a pensioner he is unable to foot this bill due to his family's current financial plight. He requests the public and philanthropists to assist his cause by sending whatever financial contribution possible to help expedite his surgery and save his life.

All contributions should be remitted to A/C number 133-2-001-5-7909895 at the People's Bank, Madandura Branch.


Attorney-at-law

Malaka Indrajith Ganapola of No 51, Mudungoda, Belummahara took oaths as an attorney-at-law of the Supreme Court before a three members' bench recently.

A past pupil of Rathupaswala Bodhiraja Vidyalaya and Gampaha Bandaranaike Maha Vidyalaya. Ganepola is the eldest son of former Lake House employee G A K P Ganepola attached to the Sunday Observer Advertising Department and Mala Indrani Edirisinghe of Belummahara.
