Gem pit worker dies

Weerasinghe Nandadasa Silva, 54, father of two, of Marapana, Elvitigala died in a gem pit when a mound of earth collapsed on him.

Seven men were working on the pit on that day.

Nandadasa had shouted to others to escape when he saw the earth collapse, the gem pit workers said. They had tried to save Nandadasa after climbing out but he could not be saved.

Nivithigala Police are investigating.
